The South-Western Ontario Research Data Centre is an 1,800 square foot facility located on the second floor of the PAS (Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology) building at the University of Waterloo. The facility is physically secure, and accessible only to authorized personnel. The data are maintained on a high speed central server, and made available to authorized researchers through eleven workstations configured with sophisticated multi-processor hardware and a range of statistical computing software. Additional space is devoted to research offices and meeting rooms.

Researchers are assisted in their analysis of the data by a full-time Statistics Canada employee. The configuration and design of the site is such that researchers can plan to spend extended periods of time at a workstation, along with ancillary research materials, until such time the project which they are working on is completed.

Equipment:

Researchers are free to work on any of the workstations subject to availability. Two workstations are currently running Fedora Core 3 (64-bit version), and the remainder use Windows XP. For very intensive computational tasks such as bootstrapping, researchers can be granted direct access to the IBM x460, 8-way high performance server (running Windows 2003 Server, 64-bit). Those who are interested in accessing the IBM machine should speak to Brian Cozzarin (Co-Director) at ext. 3291.
