CD-ROM DATABASES

The following is a brief overview of recent acquisitions available in-house only. Access is limited either through licensing agreements or as a result of unique proprietary software used to access the data. Help sheets are available in paper format in the display outside the DRC office or on-line by following the link provided on this page for each title.

DATABASES:

ENERGY STATISTICS HANDBOOK 2002 is an anthology of data produced in a wide variety of separate publications. Topics include economic indicators, total energy figures, energy trade, petroleum, international petroleum, reserves, natural gas, electricity, coal, and prices. Updated monthly. ESAS - Extraction System of Agricultural Statistics 2002is the result of a joint project of Statistics Canada and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. This database provides users with the most commonly requested physical and financial farm data in pre-defined or custom formats. Data includes revenue information as well as land use and livestock inventories. The years covered in these surveys varies according to the source. FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE INDICATORS 2001 is an authoritative reference source of key financial ratios by industry. This database is restricted the members of the University of Guelph community.

GEOREF is another Statistics Canada product. It is based on the 1996 geographic reference information. Data contained includes basic population and dwelling counts, land area figures, as well as geographic codes and corresponding names. Files correlating 1991 geographic areas with changes in the 1996 information are also available.

INDUSTRIAL MONITOR 2000 contains a series of statistical tables which can be used for industrial analysis and  forecasting. It provides up to 50 key indicators for approximately 150 industries on a monthly basis. Tables illustrate five key aspects of an industry's market: Demand, Supply, Price/Cost, Investment/Capital Stock, and Labour/Employment. Updated quarterly. INTER-CORPORATE OWNERSHIP 2002contains information on the ownership structure of the Canadian corporate sector. Corporate ownership on this database is defined as the percentage of ownership of the corporation's voting share. Updated quarterly. OECD STATISTICAL COMPENDIUM 2002 is a compilation of economic statistics of member countries.  Coverage spans from 1960 - present in monthly, quarterly and annual time series.  Information  includes stats on Agriculture, National Accounts, Labour, Energy and Economic Indicators. Updated quarterly. This database is restricted to members of the University of Guelph community.

OFFICIAL VOTING RESULTS contains poll by poll results of the Thirty-sixth Federal General Election held in 1997.  Results by province, region, federal electoral district as well as by party are also available on this CD-ROM. These results plus other years are available free on-line through the Elections Canada site.

POSTAL CODE COUNTS is derived from the 1996 Census and contains population and dwelling counts for all postal codes reported by census respondents. The population and dwelling counts are provided by individual postal code, forward sortation area (FSA - the first three characters of the postal code), province/territory, and for Canada. SMALL BUSINESS PROFILES provide selected revenue, expense, profit and balance sheet items as well as financial ratios and employment data on small business in Canada. Small businesses are defined as those having annual revenue between $30,000 and $5,000,000. The information is presented by 4-digit SIC code (1980 Standard Industrial Classification). Data for 1997 was released in March 2000. This database is restricted the members of the University of Guelph community.

SUB-PROVINCIAL EMPLOYMENT DYNAMICS provides information on the creation and losses of jobs and businesses by sub-provincial areas for the period 1983 through 1996. These sub-provincial areas include Census Metropolitan Areas (CMAs), Census Agglomeraitons (CAs), and specific towns and rural areas for all the provinces and territories. This database is restricted the members of the University of Guelph community.

TIERS - Trade Information Enquiry and Retrieval System contains data on Canadian international merchandise trade. Coverage includes data from 1991 - 1996. Users can retrieve data selected by Harmonized Code, by province, by country, by year and by export or import.  This database is restricted the members of the University of Guelph community.

Most databases are equipped with on-screen tutorials. All have on screen help access and have the capacity to allow users to manipulate the variables offered as well as the results retrieved from the chosen variables.

All databases allow users to download or export results to spreadsheet files for manipulation and use.
