STREET NETWORK FILE (SNF)

Description - User Guides - Datasets - Example - back to Geographic Census Data Index

Description:

These files provide the street network for most large urban centers in Canada. They include streets, railroad tracks and other pertinent features such as street names and address ranges. In combination with the user's appropriate software, the Street Network Files are useful for route planning, delivery services and mapping. When considering a particular application, the user should be aware of the various vintages of the Street Network Files at the census subdivision level. (Source: Stats Canada,1991)

Comparisons between  the 1991 and 1996 Street Network Files

The 1996 Street Network Files have the same look and feel as the 1991 product. The road network and address information reflect the information collected on Census Day - May 14, 1996, for all Street Network Files. The 1991 Street Network Files had reference dates that ranged from June 1986 to May 1991. There were 342 SNFs in 1991, while the 1996 Census contained 344 SNFs.

Addresses have been imputed where possible in order to assist users who may wish to do address geocoding. An address imputation flag has been added to allow users to identify which street or addresses have been imputed. A water feature field has been added in the ARC/INFO version of the SNF and SNFEF, and separate water polygon files created for both MapInfo and ARC/INFO.

The 1996 Street Network Files are available in English and in French.

The 1996 Street Network Files do not include the two point coverages (cover.cen and cover.pat) found in the 1991 product.
