URBAN AREAS (UA) - CBF

Description - Datasets - back to Cartographic Boundary Files

Description:

The Urban Areas Cartographic Boundary File for Canada contains the boundaries of all 913 urban areas for the 2001 Census. An urban area has a minimum population concentration of 1,000 persons and a population density of at least 400 persons per square kilometre, based on the current census population count. All territory outside urban areas is classified as rural. Taken together, urban and rural areas cover all of Canada.

The urban areas were delineated based on the 2001 Census population data. They were delineated after the creation of the base layer hydrography that had been used as the basis for the other boundary files. Thus, the urban area boundaries from the NGB had to be integrated with the base layer hydrography separately.

The Urban Area boundary files were created to be used for shading the more urbanised areas when mapping other boundaries available as Cartographic Boundary Files. This file is only meant for shading polygons and no arc attributes such as ARC_CLASS are available with this file.

There is no arc attribute table with this file.
