The University of Guelph Data Resource Centre is a joint venture of the Library and Computing and Communications Services (CCS).

Overview:

The purpose of the DRC is to act as a central repository for all types of data available on campus and to supply user support to this data through an easily accessible and staffed location. The staff in the DRC have developed a web-based retrieval system which interfaces with many of our major holdings. These datasets are available through the combined web site TDR which is a joint venture of the Universities of Guelph, Waterloo, and Wilfrid Laurier.

Users are able to retrieve subsets of data in a wide array of formats and are also able to perform simple 'summary' statistics on-line without any experince in the use of statistical software. This includes such options as frequencies, cross-tabs, means and simple regression. Work is in progress to expand this functionality to include a graphical representation of data.

The Data Resource Centre also holds a collection of data sets which are only available in-house (see Location listed below). These datasets cannot be mounted on the web either due to restricted licence agreements or because of the nature of proprietary software used by the producer to deliver the data. These databases are listed in the TDR website under web retrieval.

Major data holdings are collected from DLI and ICPSR. Our holdings on campus  include  population and agricultural censuses, general social surveys, labour surveys, CANSIM, consumer surveys and many more. Data is also purchased from other sources on an ad hoc basis.

Once users have access to the data they can contact staff at the Data Analysis Group in CCS (ext 58002) or The Ashton Statistical Laboratory (ext 56185) if assistance is required in the analysis of the data.

There is also a series of very popular CD-ROMs accessible through machines in our office or from specified machines within the DRC Computer Pool. Log-in accounts to access in-house data can be obtained by contacting DRC staff.
